Voto Latino Files Lawsuit Against SB 1111, Says Real Intention is to Suppress Voter Turnout Via Confusion, Fearmongering

Texas – Following Texas Governor Greg Abbott signing into law SB 1111, Voto Latino, the nation’s premier Latinx voter registration organization, and Texas State LULAC, filed a lawsuit challenging the bill, which prohibits Texans from registering to vote using commercial post office boxes. 

According to the Dallas Morning News, “critics of the law say that it could block people experiencing homelessness, who sometimes use nonprofit or church post office boxes for voter registration, from casting their ballots.”

“Despite failing to pass the omnibus voter suppression bill SB 7, Governor Abbott has already signed SB 1111, a more limited bill, but one that is intended to confuse and discourage voters by threatening penalty over minor address discrepancies,” said Voto Latino CEO María Teresa Kumar. “The premise of this bill is a fallacy, and its real intention is clear. It is designed to suppress voter turnout throughout the state, specifically targeting young people, lower-income people, and people of color. This is an unacceptable violation of the right of all Americans to vote and take part in our democracy, and we will fight to make sure every voter in Texas, and around the country, has access to the voting booth.” 

SB 1111 prohibits voters from establishing residency at any place they have not inhabited, or at a previous residence, unless the voter inhabits the home at the time of designation and intends to remain. 

It also requires registrants to prove their residency whenever county officials suspect that the voter’s current address is different from the address in the registration records, and accepts only a handful of documents as sufficient proof, prohibiting voters, with few exceptions, from using a post office box address as confirmation of their residence.
