Trump becomes the first president in United States history to be impeached twice.

Washington, DC – For his role in inciting an armed insurrection on the United States Capitol one week ago, Donald Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives, the first president in American history to be impeached twice. The case will now move to the Senate to determine whether he will be convicted and removed from office. Voto Latino supports Trump’s impeachment and urges the Senate to convict him of sedition and remove him from office. Per Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, a sedition conviction would prohibit Trump from running for public office in the future. This will still be possible if the Senate trial takes place after Trump leaves office in the January 20th transition.

“Donald Trump’s abdication of the oath of office in an attempt to overturn a democratically-elected successor runs afoul of our Constitution and the will of the voters,” said María Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “Trump’s second impeachment will be marked in history. School children will learn of this reckoning in our country. May history help prevent future attempted coups.”

In addition to convicting and removing Trump from office, the Senate also has the power to strip him of post-presidency benefits, such as lifetime Secret Service detail and a taxpayer-funded pension. A betrayal of the Constitution and the encouragement of violence against Congress, while in the midst of performing its legally-obligated duties, must be held as sufficiently heinous behavior to warrant these extraordinary steps.
